Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) was born in Electric City, Washington.
After studying on the West Coast he moved east and established himself in New York to work as an artist while he taught in an art school.
In a very short amount of time he was already a part of the principle new movements in contemporary art in fact, he helped establish Land Art & Body Art as well as, Video and Performance Art.
Over a span of forty years of work, he used all possible methods including mechanical, industrial methods and fire works. He created works for public spaces, interior and exterior.
The artist stated that his primary objective was not work on an object or subject; "when you are operating on the operation you have found a way to separate yourself from the things and you operate in a more intangible way." He remained extremely active up to his death in 2011. In 2009 he had seven public works in progress as well as numerous lectures.
